athlete competition

I compete in a number of other local, regional, and national Pro-Am events. On the pro level, I have competed in many World Qualifying Series (WQS) events. Based out of Northern California and Hawaii, I have been a winner and finalist in a number of different Pro-Am events. Surfing competition is cut-throat, and advancing through any pro competition is a difficult task, even for the best.

 A few past competitions .......

2005 VOLCOM PRO-AM EVENT #2 STEAMER LANE-NOVEMBER THIS EVENT WAS PROBABLY SOME OF THE BIGGEST SURF EVER FOR ANY VOLCOM CONTEST. aT 5:30AM I HEARD THE BUOYS READING 16FT@ 17SECONDS. 10 FOOT GUN FOR A VOLCOM PRO-AM??? IT WAS A GOOD CALL. I SHOWED UP, AND IT WAS LOOKING LIKE I WAS THE ONLY ONE WITH THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT. BEFORE THE EVENT I WENT OUT TO MIDDLE PEAK, AND GOT SOME PRETTY GOOD WAVES. I FOLLOWED THE PACK AND RODE MY SHORTBOARD. BLEW IT!      MORE PHOTOS CLICK HERE

2005  25th annual SUNSHINE-FREESTYLE SURFABOUT (june4-5)

This years Sunshine Surfabout was a classic mixture of soul and talent. The first day of competition was blessed with great surf.... glassy and overhead on sets. There were around 170 competitors in all categories vying for All-Around Waterman. By the end of the final day it got pretty windy, but overall the event was great. I finished out 3rd in the finals... after 2 full-days of competition and some tuff heats.  What an event!

THE 2001 RUSTY/ XCEL PRO at Sunset Beach.

I pulled off a huge freefall-drop, and it was enough for me to appear a few times on Fox-Net Sports, Bluetorch TV, and FUEL TV. These events attract many spectators and media, due to the intense surf and beautiful surroundings. I finished 47th in the Main Event Round of 64 out of 250 competitors.

The 2004 Hansens Pipeline Pro- Oahu, Hawaii Easily one of the most dangerous waves in the world, Pipeline is hard. These guys have guts to throw themselves over the ledge at Pipeline... its a risky proposal. Due to this fact there is no shortage of spectators, tourists, photographers and media, the beach is standing room only, and parking was out of this world. "This event was considered, even by the most seasoned Hawaiian veteran, to be the best 5 consecutive days at Pipeline in memory." It was epic. "I paddled out and got a nice tube.... it kept me in the forefront till the end. A huge set came through and someone got an interference-call dropping in on me. I lost in the last 4 minutes! I live for Pipeline."  Wayne Kelly

The 2004 Belmar Pro (New Jersey) Waves in New Jersey? With the Hurricane season looming there was swell after swell... and the Belmar Pro scored epic surf. I had some success, taking out some well-known pros and scoring an amazing tube that was the highlight. "I was right off the jetty in that photo above, and got the most insane east coast barrel Ive ever gotten, right off the contest scaffold, moments before my first heat."

THE 2004 DEL TACO PRO-Huntington Beach In July, my friend, team-mate and sparring partner Dan Hart loaded up and drove down to Huntington for the del Taco Pro. On the way, we scored unreal waves and generally had a great trip. We both advanced in the event, but lost out before the final day.

3rd place 2005 Sunshine Surfabout  June 4-5 of this year.... great 2 day event with real aloha spirit! Decent 4 foot surf!!!

1st place 2001 4th of JULY NHS Pro-Am "best barrel" at 26th avenue..With class event format Santa Cruz loses after Wayne gets da barrel of the day, and takes out top SC pros!!! Big South-swell rocks 26th ave. and there were some standup+ beach break barrels! Through some tuff heats and competition right in for the win. Yah Wayne!

2nd place 2002 SUNSHINE surfabout....... classic surf with 5 foot glassy barrels and 4 other guys out till the final. Everyone was a winner!!

7th Place 2003 Volcom Great White series event #1  Lagunas, California 2 foot closeouts..onshore wind..one-hit wonders to the semi-finals.

9th place 2004 Lost Pro-Am  Santa Cruz, California.... the finals had WQS level surfing w/ airshow format..... I made the final finish along with team-mate Dan Hart with legendary awards party afterward. Thank you Mike at Lost!!!

Round of 32   2001 Da Hui Expression Session/ Sunset Beach.....  Worlds best WQS competitors with even a few WCT seeds. Sunset divvies out perfect 8-10 foot surf, and competitor Wayne Kelly seems invincible on his backside. Too bad this event was scratched due to a surplus of events on North Shore.... mahalos to Da Hui for putting on the best events.

47th place 2003 WQS 3-star XCEL PRO, Sunset Beach, Hawaii   Out-of-control 8-15 foot death-sentence Sunset Beach! Expect anything different?? Next day was epic but I narrowly lost out from advancing to the Round of 32. Even the board-caddies sitting in the channel snapped some boards! Big closeout sets shut-down day 2!!!!!

top 100 RATED PRO  in the World Qualifying Series (WQS) for 3 months in 1999 after the ONEILL COLDWATER CLASSIC. (Rest of the tour went overseas....bumped down after missing overseas competitions. Due to limited funding Wayne only competes in select North America and Hawaii events.
