HURRICANE BERTHA PUSHES NEW YORK SWELL PHOTOS BY WK
Most people would never think of New York as a surf destination, or even that theres good surf there.
The water was 72 deg, the waves were sweet, and it was sunny and warm. Thats more than I can say for California right now. I got back to fog, flat waves, and cold water.
The water was so warm, it made using my water-housing a pleasure. Here it looks like my red Vernor Surfboard is about to bust through the lip section.
My brother and I were calling this perfect wave "Lifeguard Lefts", because it was off-limits to surfers between 8-5 every day. It was the best on the beach, but the lifeguards wouldnt let you touch it.
The first day was glassy, waist+ high, and near perfect. An unknown surfer catches some sparkle.
Standing on the beach, I stood there as this beast threw over my head, then it knocked me down.
There was a machine-like right through the inside, and it actually had some power.
jus like anywhere.... the girls were looking at the guys, and the guys looked at the girls.
Surfing is seasonal in New York. The winter is cold... below freezing with snow on the beach. Without traveling your not surfing for more than half the year, and that taps your skills. Here a guy shakes off some cob webs, but totally plows his bro... for real. It was heavy to witness.
Another right ropes off, with no takers. It was so good out there, with no one around.
Here someone negotiates the staircase, but this staircase had teeth. He had problems.
The right bowled off this bar so good. I had the best time surfing it, and here is why.
The wave was producing a sand-point style right hander, and more than one person was trying to get some. There was plenty for all, thanks to Bertha.
14 year old local Andrew Brooks had some skills, and he worked with me on one of the smaller days.
Here Andrew sets up the shorebreak, It was bowling right on the beach, perfect for water shots.
Water photography is so hard, and getting all elements to come together is even harder.
Here Andrew sets up a bowl through the shorebreak, and he was alot closer than it looks.
The lefts were pretty fun, and Andrew was there every day flaring on it.
In New York theres alot of girls that surf, and I thought it was really cool girls surf there.
This unknown longboarder girl hooked up all the set waves, and made it look easy.
It wasnt huge, but these waves were actually powerful, even by California standards.
This girl wasnt paying attention, and got lipped right in the head by this wave. Unfortunately she got slammed real hard and got hurt. I felt bad for her... but I guess I know what thats like!
Here an unknown New Yorker lays it on the rail, enjoying the fun waves and weather.
One day there was a surf contest, and I was surprised by the great talent.
My brother BK rented a stand-up paddle board, and made it look easy. Here he is on the boat.
My 5 year old boy Kai Kelly had a blast surfing New York, as the water is warm and refreshing there.
Kai stood up a number of times, and people actually got up off the beach to congratulate him.
Another water angle of the shorebreak action.
My brother Mike, getting ready to load a board for our boat trip out to an Island to surf.
We took this boat out to an Island, and scored really good overhead surf.
we got out to the Island, and it was way overhead and good.
Waves like this rolled through consistently, and we got the best waves of our trip.
We took Virgin airlines, and I got this self-portrait on our flight home.
